The Punjab government has finally approved Rs1.46 billion for the Rawalpindi Ring Road and the reconstruction of Kutchery Chowk.

The Leh Expressway and Flood Channel Financing, however, remain stalled. Money set aside for all development plans had previously been ordered to be frozen by the interim provincial government.

Saif Anwar Jappa, director general of the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), told that the Punjab Government had allocated funds for two major projects in the garrison city and that construction on them will soon begin. After consulting with stakeholders, work on two massive projects will begin in Rawalpindi, according to the RDA chief.

While we reminded the authorities that these two were ongoing projects for which the procurement procedure had also been finished, he said that the caretaker administration had frozen all development money.

He claimed that the RDA had already finished the necessary preparation for the projects’ execution, which would begin following stakeholder consultation.

He declared, “These two initiatives are not politically driven and have been initiated for the welfare of the public to end traffic rush in the garrison city and Islamabad.

He stated that in order to begin the projects, the RDA will also need approval from the Pakistani Election Commission (ECP). After receiving approval from the commission, the projects will be started, according to a letter that has been sent to it.

He claimed that the Ring Road project would include economic zones in addition to new roads.

The RDA director stated that the selection process for a company to conduct an independent evaluation of the Ring Road route will be finished by the end of March. He claimed that as soon as the contractor, Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), submitted a traffic plan, construction would begin on rebuilding Kutchery Chowk.

He added that land owned by Fatima Jinnah Women University, the commissioner office, and the Police Lines will be purchased. He also indicated that land acquisition for the Kutchery Chowk renovation would commence shortly.

The RDA has asked the government to provide it the state land it needs for the project.

The Leh Expressway and Flood Channel project was still in its early stages, according to the RDA director general, hence the government did not provide funds for it. However, he added that the project would be incorporated into the Punjab government’s yearly development plans in the following fiscal year.
