RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has chosen to restart working on Liaquat Bagh underpass project from the previous PML-N Punjab administration in order to make Murree Road a signal-free corridor in the current budget year, after languishing it for five years.

A top RDA official claims that in order to decide whether a flyover or an underpass should be erected at Liaquat Bagh Plaza in order to make the crowded street signal free, the municipal body spent more than Rs11 million on a feasibility study in 2017.

Both the flyover from Moti Mahal Cinema and the underpass from Rashid Minhas Road to Liaquat Bagh were slated for building.

He asserted that the engineering department’s committee selected a design submitted by the consultant, and it was then forwarded to the Punjab government for approval.

The province government allocated Rs. 10 million for the feasibility study and the consultant’s fee. But after the 2018 general elections, the province’s previous PTI administration abandoned the project.

However, the process to resume work on the project has started again in the current fiscal year, and the RDA has sent the project to the government for inclusion in the annual development programme.

He asserted that the RDA would construct an underpass this time and a link to Liaquat Road that would lead to Fawara Chowk on the road that connects Saddar and Faizabad.

Since it would have cost more money to purchase land on each side of the Liaquat Baghsquare, it was determined that the flypast at Liaquat Bagh was impractical.

According to the RDA director general, the underpass would be constructed on Murree Road in front of Liaquat Bagh on the Saddar to Faizabad side, and the road will be connected to Liaquat Road.

He asserted that locals wanted to reduce traffic on Liaquat Bagh Chowk, especially for people heading in the direction of Raja Bazaar.

He said that the RDA had produced a preliminary plan and submitted it to the Punjab government for final approval. It will be included in the following annual report.
